Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)
Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery to change the shape, size or position of the ears. It treats prominent ears (ears that stick out from the side of the head) overly large ears or misshapen ears. However, it doesn’t impact or improve a person’s ability to hear sounds.
Who needs Otoplasty?
You might choose to have otoplasty if your ear or ears stick out too far from your head, or your ears are large in proportion to your head.
When to see a specialist?
If you’re having ears that protrude, are larger or smaller than normal or have an abnormal shape then you should consult with a plastic surgeon to examine your ears and talk with you about your expectations.
Procedure
Anesthesia: – General anesthesia is given for your comfort during the surgical procedure.
The Incision: – Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the Anti helical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, nonremovable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.
Closing the incision: – After the surgery, the incision is closed with the stitches.
Recovery
After the procedure, your ears will be covered in bandages for protection and support. You’ll likely feel some discomfort and itching after surgery. Take pain medication as recommended by your doctor.
Risks
There are several risks included:
Scarring.
Asymmetry in ear placement.
Allergic reaction.
Problems with stitches.
Changes in skin sensation
Overcorrection
Benefits of otoplasty
Otoplasty procedure corrects prominent ears, improves facial symmetry and creates a natural appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery that is done to change the size, shape or position of the ears.
How is otoplasty performed?
Your surgeon makes a cut just behind the ear, within the natural crease where the ear meets the head. Depending on the individual’s needs, the doctor removes, reshapes or softens the amount of cartilage and skin to accomplish the desired effects. In some cases, the cartilage is cropped and shaped into a more attractive, natural-looking form. Then, the cartilage is secured with permanent sutures, which are hidden behind the ear, to keep the new position in place.
Is otoplasty painful?
Otoplasty isn’t painful as patients are placed under general anesthesia for surgery. However, you may feel some discomfort immediately after the procedure, as your ears will be bandaged to reduce swelling and preserve healing.
How long does otoplasty take?
Otoplasty surgery takes around one to three hours, depending on the complexity. The length of your procedure will be affected by numerous factors, including the technique used and the scope of your procedure.
What are the risks of otoplasty?
Otoplasty, as with any other type of major surgery, has risks, including scarring, asymmetry in ear placement, changes in skin sensation, allergic reaction, problems with stitches. Your surgeon will discuss the risks of otoplasty before the surgery.
