Bariatric surgery is a surgical subspecialty that focuses on the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders. The main objective of this treatment  is to achieve weight loss and improve the patient’s overall health and quality of life. It involves making changes to the stomach and sometimes the intestines to reduce the amount of food the body can handle. There are different types of bariatric surgery that includes gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding, among others. These procedures work by altering the digestive system’s anatomy to reduce food intake or absorption.

• Gastric bypass- In gastric bypass, surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and then connects it directly to small intestine. By doing this, it reduces the amount of food you can eat.
• Sleeve gastrectomy- In sleeve gastrectomy, surgeon removes approx. 80% of your stomach and leaves behind smaller banana shaped stomach. This reduction in stomach size limits the amount of food you can eat and leads to weight loss.
• Adjustable gastric banding- In this adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach by the surgeon. This creates a small stomach pouch. The small stomach pouch means you will feel full after eating less food and this procedure will lead to weight loss.
