The monsoon has arrived and we cannot say it is all “rimjhim rimjhim barsat”. The southern states have started to record the increasing Dengue cases and it is alarming. Karnataka is dealing with a big increase in dengue cases, especially in Hassan district, where children are the most affected. Recently, two girls under 15 died from dengue in Hassan. The Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) is very busy, treating 21 children for dengue, including 7 in intensive care.

What is Dengue and how is it causes?

When speaking of Increasing Dengue Cases, you must understand what it is. Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes that can cause flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, become severe.

Know the symptoms to stop the increasing Dengue cases

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Mild bleeding (nose or gums)

What do the experts say?

Dr. Santosh, the Director of HIMS, and Dr. Praveen, the Resident Medical Officer, say that stringent measures being implemented to stop the spread of the virus.

These include dedicated ICUs and specialized wards for dengue patients to prevent further fatalities. MP Shreyas Patel has taken an active role in the response by convening a meeting with health officials to develop and coordinate additional strategies.

Causes for increasing Dengue cases

Dengue is caused by the dengue virus and spreads through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite someone who already has dengue.

As per the report, “Since January, HIMS has treated 628 adults and 602 children for dengue. Four people have died in Hassan because of dengue, with two of these deaths confirmed by the State dengue death audit committee. More than 6,400 people have been tested for dengue in the district.”

What can you do to prevent Increasing Cases of Dengue?

Here are some of the ways you can prevent Dengue

Avoid mosquito bites:

  • Use insect repellent.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Use mosquito nets while sleeping

Control mosquitoes:

  • Empty and clean containers that hold water (flower pots, buckets).
  • Cover water storage containers.
  • Keep the environment clean to prevent mosquito breeding.
